How to Help Your Young Adult be Brave

Public speaking. Heights. Spiders. Did you know that these are the top three fears for Americans? Fear is the belief that something has the potential to harm you. It’s rooted in a lack of control.

The word “fear” occurs over 300 times in the Bible. Clearly, fear is something that has gripped mankind since the fall. It takes away our ability to enjoy life’s best moments and our ability to connect with the people closest to us. And when we fear things we can’t control, we ultimately allow fear to control us.

Fear first gripped Sadie Robertson from a young age when her family drove to Arlington, TX for a Texas Rangers game. On the way there, she saw a dirt storm, spiraling like a tornado. From that moment, the weather made her feel afraid because it was beyond her control.

When Sadie learned to trust God with her fear, her story completely changed. Even though she still had feelings of anxiety from time to time, she learned to surrender those feelings to God rather than letting fear control her.

Her process of learning to surrender those fears to the Lord took time – it was not instantaneous. She began by learning Scripture, and she would quote verses to herself when feelings of anxiety rose up within her – verses like Isaiah 41:10, which says, “Fear not, for I am with you…I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Sadie says her trust in the Lord comes from her daily pursuit of God through His Word. By being in His Word every day, she is able to remember Scripture that reminds her of God’s goodness when fearful moments arise.

The Bible is a powerful tool that shows us the heart of God. He speaks through His Word to remind us to trust Him even when we’re afraid. If you’re gripped by fear, I encourage you to join us for our Focus on the Family Broadcast “How to Help Your Young Adult be Brave.” Sadie is with us as our guest to share how you can get in God’s Word and memorize specific passages that speak to what you are walking through right now.

When you have trouble believing God’s Word, that’s when you have to speak His Truth until you believe it. Meditate on Bible verses and let them sink deep into your heart. That’s the point of reading verses over and over again: speak them until you believe or until you see God move. Choose to surrender your fears to God and trust Him. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” Walk in the authority of the One who is greater than your fear.
